The Least Healthy Road Race Ever

8th Annual Krispy Kreme Challenge in RaleighThe 8th Annual Krispy Kreme Challenge, a five-mile charity run, took place recently in Raleigh, North Carolina. Nearly 8,000 runners entered the event, where more than 90,000 glazed doughnuts were distributed at a rest stop along the course.

Mathematically, that amounts to about a dozen for each competitor.

Wrote Thad Ogburn in the Raleigh News and Observer before the race:  "How do we put this delicately?  Um, not everyone will make it back to the finish line with all the doughnuts in his or her stomach. Watch your step."

An Unusual Tribute At A Recent Vancouver Canucks Game

Salmon tossing honors Garrett Paquette in VancouverDiehard hockey fans traditionally have been known to toss sea creatures onto the ice, with the most notable example being the famous octopi of Detroit. In recent months, Vancouver Canucks followers may have set the bar a bit higher by conceiving a brand new tradition.

The latest example of this took place when the Canucks hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday. With about four minutes remaining in the third period, while the players were awaiting a faceoff on one end of the ice, a five-pound salmon was tossed onto the other end of the Rogers Arena rink.

The Soccer Game That Just Wouldn’t End

Bishop’s of La Jolla vs San Diego Crawford two-day soccer gameTwo San Diego-area high schools, Bishop’s of La Jolla and San Diego Crawford, played a Division IV playoff game last Tuesday. The two squads tied 3-3 in regulation, so the game went to penalty kicks, with each team making 18 out of 21 shots, before darkness set in.

As a result, the game was postponed until Wednesday with still no winner.

Finally, on the 49th penalty kick taken during Wednesday’s overtime (the 50th penalty kick overall) Bishop scored and Crawford missed on its final attempt to once again tie the game.

Matt Harris, who scored the final goal of Bishop's La Jolla's two-day shootout victory, said afterwards:  "All of us were so nervous on every kick.  Any kick could have been the end.  All of us were holding our breath."

London 2012 Shaping Up To Be The Sexiest Olympics Ever

150,000 free condoms to be distributed at 2012 London OlympicsLondon 2012 may not be the greatest Olympic Games ever, but it may indeed be the sexiest.

One Olympic record is guaranteed to be set as organizers announced that 150,000 free condoms will be distributed in the athletes' village for use by the participants. This is easily more than at any previous Games.

A former US javelin champion told the London Daily Mail that the numbers are reasonable.

"There's a lot of sex going on. Testosterones up, everybody's attracted to everybody."

Free condoms at the Olympics began in Barcelona in 1992, where thousands of supplies ran out quickly.  At Sydney in 2000, the number increased to 70,000 and then a record of 130,000 were distributed in Athens during 2004.

Adventurous Rowers Dare To Bare For A Good Cause

Row for Freedom rowing nudeFive British women smashed the existing world record by rowing across the Atlantic Ocean in a boat of five rowers in just 45 days (previous record was 49 days). They completed their extreme endurance by discovering the clandestine tactic of rowing nude.

"We spent a lot of time rowing naked because when the sea water gets inside your clothes it increases friction against your skin which can cause sores," said Debbie Beadle, skipper of the Row for Freedom team

The five women accomplished the feat to raise money for a charity which acquires funds for anti-human trafficking causes. Beadle added that their motivation to accomplish something notable for a worthy cause far outweighed any inhibitions the crew had about nudity.

A Boston-Less Postseason Maybe In The NBA’s Future

Celtics hold teams under 100 in 29 straightThe Boston Celtics have the second best defense in the NBA, allowing only 88.5 points per game. In fact, the team had gone 29 straight games holding their opponents under 100 points (fourth longest in NBA history) before being exposed by the Oklahoma City Thunder, in a 119-104 loss on Wednesday night.

The Thunder made the Celtics look old and creaky, as Boston fell to 15-17, the team’s fifth straight loss heading into the All-Star break. Boston’s "Big Three" may not even make the playoffs this season.

Is it time to break up the 2008 NBA Champions and rebuild the team around point guard Rajon Rondo?

"Obviously, Jared's got a big butt and he uses it to his advantage," explained Boals.

Clemson Hoops Is O For Ever At Chapel Hill

Clemson 0-56 at North CarolinaThere are very few sure things in sports, but one definitely takes place whenever Clemson plays basketball at North Carolina. That's because the Tigers have never defeated the Tar Heels in their long series and are now 0-56 versus Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Saturday, North Carolina won 74-52 and now leads the overall series 125-20.  The first time the two squads met in North Carolina was back in 1926 and the Tigers are still winless there.

The remarkable streak includes four different arenas, 15 Presidential administrations and more than 31,000 days. It is believed to be the longest winning streak in sports.
