The Knicks Went From Linsanity To Skinsanity?

J.R. Smith nude tweet and $25,000 fineIt didn't take J.R. Smith long to hear from the league office, after signing with the New York Knicks last month. Smith, who had been playing in China, was fined $25,000 for tweeting a nude photo of a female friend.

Or, as Mike Bianchi wrote in the Orlando Sentinel:

"That's what I call Skin-sanity!"

Friday Was An All-Time Day Of NCAA Upsets

Friday Was An All-Time Day Of NCAA Upsets Last Friday was the most surprising day in NCAA tournament history, as there were seven upsets in the 16 games played.

The two losses with the largest impact on the brackets were by number two seeds Duke and Missouri.  The Blue Devils were stoned by lowly Lehigh 75-70, while the Tigers were beaten by Norfolk State 86-84. A number fifteen had defeated a number two seed only four times in history before this year.

Missouri was a trendy pick to get to the Final Four, while Duke was---well Duke.

#13 Ohio University ousted #4 Michigan 65-60 and #12 South Florida ground up #5 Temple 58-44, in two other huge surprises.

Female Boxers To Wear Skirts In London?

Female Boxers To Wear Skirts In LondonThe international federation for boxing (AIBA) has introduced female boxing for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, with 36 boxers scheduled to compete for medals. A few months back, AIBA generated a good deal of controversy by implying that these female competitors would have to wear skirts in the ring, as opposed to the standard pair of shorts.  Some lady boxers were quoted as saying they do not even wear skirts when they go out with their friends, with AIBA countering that skirts make it easier to determine whether boxers are male or female.

Following a recent meeting of AIBA’s executive committee, in which the issue was part of the discussion, it has officially been determined that women fighters will have the choice of either sticking with shorts, or adorning the controversial skirts.

American Track Team Shows Its Strength In Istanbul

Americans Shine At IAAF World Indoor ChampionshipsWith a little more than four months to go before the London Olympic Games, Team USA showed the rest of the track and field world that they will be a force to be reckoned with this summer.

Last weekend in Istanbul, at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, the US captured ten gold medals, the most in team history. The previous high for the USA was eight.

England finished far behind with two golds.

Team USA also collected three silver medals and five bronzes.

Highlights included a world record in the heptathlon (seven events) by Ashton Eaton and an American record in the long jump by defending champion Brittney Reese.

Bernard Lagat won his third World Indoor title in the 3,000 meters, becoming only the second runner to do so.

Alex Morgan Dons Body Paint For Swimsuit Issue

Alex Morgan Dons Body Paint For Swimsuit IssueA highlight of the recent Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue was a photo spread featuring US World Cup team member Alex Morgan .The soccer star was pictured wearing only body paint and a smile.

The 22-year-old striker, who graduated from the University of California, is a member of the 2012 Olympic Team, which will attempt to repeat its gold medal performance from the 2008 Beijing Games.

Morgan was the youngest player on the 2011 World Cup silver medal winning squad, which lost to Japan in the dramatic overtime final.

Appropriately, her team in the Women's Premier Soccer League is the Western New York Flash.

Las Vegas Lays Out Its NCAA Tournament Odds

Las Vegas Lays Out Its NCAA Tournament OddsThe sportsbook at Wynn Las Vegas has made Kentucky a clear favorite to win the NCAA Basketball Tournament, posting an opening line of 9-5 for the top seed.  By contrast, Ohio State was the tourney favorite at 4-1 odds last year.

The Wildcats, who last won the NCAA title in 1998, were only 12-20 against the point spread this season.

Other strong favorites include Syracuse at 6-1, North Carolina at 6-1 and the Buckeyes at 7-1.

Oddsmakers clearly like Ohio State more than the NCAA selectors do.

Missouri stands at 8-1, Michigan State 9-1, Kansas 12-1 and Duke 15-1.

The lines for other notable squads such as Vanderbilt are 25-1, with Marquette at 28-1 and Louisville 30-1.

Lineptitude & Melodrama Taking Over The Knicks?

Knicks 2-8 since Carmelo Anthony returned from injuryThe Knicks are rapidly sinking out of playoff contention since the return of Carmelo Anthony from injury. New York is 2-8 in those games, including a current streak of six consecutive losses.

Overall, the team stands at 18-24, heading into Wednesday’s game versus Portland.

Wrote columnist Mike Bianchi in the Orlando Sentinel:  "Hey, what happened to the Knicks?  Don't look now, but Lin-sanity is quickly turning into a Melo-drama."

Random Thoughts On The NCAA Hoops Weekend That Was

Harvard playing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1946It has been a spectacular season for Harvard, with the notoriety of 2010 graduate Jeremy Lin and the team now heading to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1946.

Missouri, with only seven scholarship players and just two players taller than 6-6, roared to the Big 12 Tournament championship, in their final season before departing for the SEC.  The Tigers will definitely be a team to watch in the upcoming NCAA Tourney.

Vanderbilt gave hope to the rest of the country when they upset Kentucky 71-64 in the SEC Tournament.  It was the Commodores first appearance in the SEC final game since the 1951 season.

Michigan State won the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2000. That year, the Spartans went on to win the NCAA title.

Goalie Gets Number One Star, Despite Allowing 13 Goals

Connor Crisp allows 13 goals, gets first starBackup goaltender Devin Williams of the Erie Otters had been injured earlier in the week. Then, starter Ramis Sadikov was knocked out in the first two minutes of last Saturday's Ontario Hockey League game with the Niagara IceDogs.

So, center Connor Crisp was pressed into service.

Crisp had not played at all this season, while recovering from shoulder surgery.  In fact, the 17-year-old had not been in goal since he was five. He was listed as the emergency goalie, but never ever expected to play.

Teheran Gets Bombed

Julio Teheran gives six homeruns in two inningsOK, it isn't what you thought.

Right-hander Julio Teheran gave up six home runs in two innings, as the Tigers hit a total of nine homers, pounding the Braves 18-3 last week in Grapefruit League play.

Hoping to win a spot in the Braves starting rotation, Teheran was betrayed by poor stuff and a strong breeze blowing out to right.

The Major League record for most homeruns allowed in a regular season game is six. Recent victims include James Shields of the Rays, Tim Wakefield of the Red Sox and R.A. Dickey of the Mets.

Teheran allowed only nine total homers last season, between stints in the minors and with the Braves in Atlanta.

He had been 15-3 at Triple A Gwinnett before his promotion.
