Celebs galore at the Yankees vs. Dodgers big city battle in LA

While Los Angeles Lakers games usually serve as the sports world's equivalent to the Academy Awards, last weekend this distinction moved north three miles up the 110 Freeway from Staples Center to Dodger Stadium.

The Los Angeles Dodgers played host to their second ever interleague matchup against the New York Yankees. The two teams that used to share the biggest city now lay claim to being the marquee baseball draws in the nation’s two largest markets.  Besides boasting the famous “NY” and “LA” logos on their hats, both teams are synonymous for their iconic pinstripe and “Dodger Blue” uniforms.

Simply put, the names Yankees and Dodgers are as American as apple pie and Disneyland. The two teams have played eleven times in the World Series.

Landon Donovan embraces his role as face of US Soccer

Wednesday, the United States advanced to the World Cup round of 16 after defeating Algeria 1-0.  In desperate need of a goal,  Landon Donovan netted a miraculous shot in minute 91 of the match. On the verge of elimination, Donovan’s late game composure resulted in a perfectly placed follow of a Rais M’Bolhi save.

This victory earned the US first place in Group C.  The team finished with a 1-0-2 record during the event’s opening round of play.  2010 marks the first time since the inaugural World Cup of 1930 that the United States finished first in their assigned group.

The Red, White & Blue will face Ghana, Saturday at 2:30 PM ET on ABC.

Ron Artest enjoying every minute of being a champion

Thursday night, the Los Angeles Lakers captured NBA Championship number 16, defeating the Boston Celtics 83-79 at Staples Center.  While guard Kobe Bryant earned NBA Finals MVP, the Lakers best player in Game 7 was the ever mercurial Ron Artest.  The forward totaled 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals in the low scoring slugfest. He also nailed a key three-point shot late in the contest.

Amazingly, the Artest highlight show did not remotely conclude when the game clock struck zero.

One of the best days & the last day of Manny’s Boston life

This weekend, Los Angeles Dodgers’ left fielder Manny Ramirez makes his long anticipated return to Fenway Park, as the Dodgers battle the Boston Red Sox in an incredibly high profile interleague matchup.

The timing of the series is quite remarkable considering these two cities are less than 24 hours removed from a 7-game NBA Finals thriller between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. Certainly, the fans of New England hope the Sox can deliver a small level of retribution to LA’s other prestigious professional franchise.

Insight into the Lakers winning formula

The Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics have battled to a 2-2 tie in the 2010 NBA Finals. As the teams prepare for a crucial Game 5, much discussion will focus on game strategy and player performance.  What is often overlooked is the dietary and hydration awareness involved with competing at the highest levels of athletics. Research indicates that NBA players can lose up to 10 pounds of sweat during an average game.  This does not factor in the level of perspiration lost during practice and conditioning efforts.

Lakers & Celtics uniting in Boston?

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is literally cashing in on the Celtics appearance in the NBA Finals. Saturday, the day before the C’s and Lakers battle in Game 5 of the series, the Democrat will attend a gala fundraiser at the Hotel Commonwealth. The event takes place at 6:00 PM ET.

NBA luminaries expected include Boston’s sworn enemy, Lakers legend Magic Johnson, Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca, coach Doc Rivers and guard Ray Allen.

Lakers sprawl vs. Celtics 90210

As the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics prepare for Game 2 of the NBA Finals, it is interesting to note the difference in accessibility between the home team and road team, particularly in a championship series situation.

During the first leg of the Finals, the Lakers will practice at Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo (five minutes south of LAX) and then head back to their respective homes scattered throughout the Los Angeles area.

Will Stephen Curry finally cure the ailing Warriors?

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry made an instant splash during his rookie NBA campaign.  The seventh pick from Davidson, averaged 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.9 steals in the 2009-2010 season. Though the Warriors finished at a familiar perch of 30 games below .500, maybe Curry’s play is a harbinger of what is to come in Oakland.

Since Rick Barry led the Warriors to the 1975 NBA Championship, the team has finished over the .500 mark only 11 times.  That equates to 24 losing seasons in the last 35 years.  Aside from the team’s miraculous upset of the Dallas Mavericks in the 2007 playoffs, there has been very little pro basketball cheer within the confines of the San Francisco Bay Area.
