You wouldn’t know it by looking at the picture, but yes Raphael Saddiq got me in trouble. It started out very innocently. Radio Station management asks me to interview Raphael Sadiq. For me this is a dream come true. The man who I believe is responsible for the “Neosoul” movement in the early 90’s. This Oakland, CA native started with his brother and cousin in a group called Tony! Toni!Tone! (if the 'Tony's " are in the wrong order, sue me lol). He was the lead singer whose voice was filled with youth, but exuded an old soul inside screaming to be heard. In those days we had yet to know about Raphael’s production and writing talents. But we would soon learn through a new singer named D’Angelo about Raphael’s hidden talents. These talents went on to touch The Roots, Q-tip, Joss Stone, Erykah Badu ,his last group, Lucy Pearl and so many others. So I was pumped with excitement when I was told to interview him, until station management told me that I could record an interview with him, but not play it back until we started playing his new record. Only problem with that is that Raphael’s new album was based off the old Stax Records sound (which was a 1950‘s sound), which meant that NO urban station with an 18-34 demographic would touch it. So basically I was wasting Raphael’s time to come all the way up to the station to do an interview that no one would hear. So what did I do? Well lets just say sometimes you have to break the rules. Needless to say Philly, Jersey and Delaware heard a great interview with Raphael Sadiq and uh well no I don’t work at that station anymore….Just another day in Laiyasworld……
