I was walking through Neiman-Marcus, at the Fashion Island Shopping Mall in Newport Beach, when I discovered Derek Jeter and Minka Kelly at one of the cosmetic counters. The Yanks are in town to play the Angels and the team usually stays at the Island Hotel, which is right across the street from the mall. This location is about 20 minutes from Angels Stadium in Anaheim. So, it makes perfect sense to see a Yankee at this store.
They were both dressed in an understated manner, with Jeter sporting some of the Jordan Brand gear he is associated with.
Shortly after spotting the couple, I witnessed three middle aged men, dressed in Yankees apparel, walking up to Jeter in search of an autograph. I moved a little closer as it was clear the fans were not getting what they came for. I heard the guys continue to push Jeter for that autograph, but DJ was having none of it. I even heard Jeter utter the words “you’re embarrassing yourself” to one of the guys.
I remember reading the below iFollo blog entry about how Jeter only will sign autographs for kids. Today, I was a first-hand witness to his feelings regarding the efforts of adult autograph seekers.

Derek Jeter is the one of the most
famous idol of base ball player of new work Yankees. There are too many reasons
to love him. He is player with good attitude and habit. Many times he won the
champion ship and got title of the best player too. Even, some time we could
hard about some issue of him by his fans and attitude. I think it is too hard
to travel as we are doing to famous peoples,
because they are being main subjects of all such media's, fans and enemy. Also,
Derek Jeter could be among on them. All of people know about Derek Jeter by his
talent and popularity. That why many fans are still increasing, small kids to
younger boys, with having a dream to be as a Derek Jeter.
My son idolized Derek Jeter, especially after reading his book. He took a lot of crap for it because we live in Angels country, but he hung tough. For his 13th birthday, we went to New York and watched his beloved Yankees play archrival Boston. Yankees won. After the game we waited by the tunnel for an hour in the hope of seeing Jeter walk out. An hour later, there he was in all his glory. By then most of the fans were gone and there were only about 10 hardcore fans still waiting. Jeter walked past us about 20 feet away. My son leaned over the barrier waving Jeter's book to him calling repeatedly, "Derek, Derek, you are my favorite player. It is my birthday. Will you sign my book?" There was no question he could hear my son. He never once turned his head or aknowledged my son in any way whatsoever. Apparently Mr. Bigtime was too busy to take 30 seconds to sign his book or even turn his head and smile or wave or do anything to acknowledge my son. My son was crushed. If Jeter is too busy or too good to handle the role of being an idol to a young boy, maybe he should get a real job like the rest of us. What a dick.
