Story Location: Sammamish, United States
Story Date: Aug 16 1998 (All day)
The only thing I can remember from the PGA tour in 1998 at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington was seeing Tiger Woods from a distance. That was 11 years ago.
I was actually volunteering during the event as a score-keeper following the professional players around trying to keep the score-card sign accurate.
I saw many other pros and Vijh Singh won the tournament, but it was seeing Tiger from a distance that keeps my memory. He had a presence and a humble grace that was uniquely powerful. And he continued to inspire every time I saw him on TV. No wonder Accenture uses Tiger for ALL of their advertising.
I speak in past tense because now that we found out that he has been unfaithful to his wife, his power washes away and my memory of his greatness fades from a distance.
Certainly God can forgive, but will the public forgive him quickly since "everyone is doing it" or will this be a long term stain that people find hard to forget (like Bill Clinton's unfaithful drama). Must all of our heroes and leaders be unfaithful?

I do not think it's possible for me to care even less about Tiger, the extramarital affairs, or the Masters Leaderboard any less than I do now. I wouldn't waste a pay day loans worth on going to view the Masters 2010 in Augusta. I viewed the Tiger Woods Nike commercial. After I saw it, I cared even less about Tiger Woods than I did before. You know who I'm rooting for? John Daly. Why is that? Simple – he's a jerk, he misbehaves, drinks and smokes abundantly. He's the villain in golf, and I LOVE to root for the bad guy.
I recently submitted a story but felt the need to comment on your post. I think it is very easy to confuse idols with heroes. Tiger didn't play golf to save the world. Tiger has, however, transformed the game of golf and highlighted the racial tensions that existed in the sport. The legend that is Tiger will continue on, but his story is forever tarred with the mistakes he has made as a human. He may be a very rich and famous human, but he is simply human. Humans make mistakes, fall down, hurt people, and hurt themselves. It is at our darkest times and in our darkest secrets do we ever really understand ourselves. What's going on with Tiger Woods right now is disappointing and tragic, but Tiger has the ability to transform a situation once again. Let's hope he makes the most of his mistakes. As far as forgiveness goes why shouldn't the public give him another shot? Is it our nature to lock someone away and throw away the key? Someone with such talent and such drive for giving into such a seductive "sin"? What's the cost+benefit=analysisist?? Doesn't what he's done as a philanthropist and the great strides he's made for social progression count for something? I certainly hope so- because if not, it's a sad, sad close minded state we are in with no hope for reform.
What happens privately in no way reflects on his talent for the game. That said, his character is severely and permanently damaged. With more low-life coming out of the woodwork, this will be front and center for the foreseeable future. Yes, God will forgive him, and maybe his wife will too someday, but his children need a father, a trustworthy father with solid character. I admit to being glued to the TV set every time he played a tournament and being in awe of his amazing talent. While I will still watch him on occasion, maybe limited to majors only, I will not longer want him to win every time he plays, as I did in the past. I have no other favorites, but I won't be that upset when he doesn't win. Sad really.
Tiger's greatness is in no way compromised in my eyes. All these people passing judgment should be ashamed of themselves!
