Little did everyone realize this was probably one of the last times they would see TLC all together. For it was early in 2002 that Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was killed in a tragic accident. This was the night of the Fan Mail Tour inside Atlanta's Phillips Arena.
At the time, the ATL was all the buzz. It was a spotting sight for the who's who of elite celebrities. The reason? The SuperBowl was coming to town.
One of the celebrities I ran into at the TLC / Christina Aguilera show...literally RAN INTO and almost spilled his beer, was Carson Daly.
At the time, TRL was in it's prime. If you were an artist and wanted to get noticed, your first stop was usually MTV's Times Square studios in New York City. Carson Daly was the face of TRL for nearly 4 years. It was a show that started out with a cult following, but ushered in musical trends such as the Boy Band Era and a resurgance in pop music.
The night I met Carson, he couldn't have been nicer. I was hustling around a corner with a recording device getting ready to talk to Howie D. of the Backstreet Boys when I ran into Carson backstage. He had seen my radio station t-shirt and was asking questions like how long I had been with the station and what format etc. Before TRL of course, Carson was a DJ himself back at KROQ in Los Angeles.
Since the moment of meeting Carson he became an inspiration of sorts. He was a guy who started out doing what I do, and has turned it into a lucrative career. He has scored a few movie roles and in addition to TRL now has a late night show that airs on NBC called "Last Call w/ Carson Daly" which has been on since 2002.
