Eric Heiden, the former world speed skating champion and Olympic Gold Medalist, is now an orthopedic surgeon in Park City, Utah. About a year ago, I took my son to see Dr. Heiden for a football injury. When Dr. Heiden heard that my son, who was 14 at the time, also wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon, he told my son not go give up on that goal. He said that he was 14 when he decided that he wanted to be a surgeon and then he offered to have my son "shadow" him during his daily routine and even in surgery. My son has since learned more about Dr. Heiden's athletic accomplishments and holds him out as one of his heros. Eric Heiden is a true gentlemen and is a great contributor to our community. I wish there were more sports celebrities willing to help and encourage kids when there are no cameras around, and were willing (unlike Charles Barkley) to be a real live hero to our youth. I hope my son grows up to be a lot like Eric Heiden.
