My future wife and I were in a magazine store one evening in Salt Lake City many years ago when I had a humorous encounter with Dave Zabriskie.  At the time, he was an up and coming local and national cycling talent that I did a few races with (in a much lesser category).  VeloNews had written an article that included him on their list of "What's Hot" in the world of cycling.  So, Dave and a buddy headed straight for the magazine section where I was standing, grabbed a VeloNews and began scanning through it .  Once they found it, Dave's buddy read it out loud, made a couple of smart remarks, laughed, and said, "Dude, at least they spelled your name right".  Dave bought the magazine and left.  I find it kind of funny to think about that moment in his life, and then think about where he's been since that time and what he's accomplished in the sport of cycling.  It reminds me that everybody, no matter how accomplished now, started at the bottom and had to work their way up.
