I don't want to say that I was really impressed by Bill Clinton's charm the first time I met him, but let's just say that when we shook hands I thought I heard Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night" playing in the background.
If you've never met President Clinton, its true what they say about his charisma. He has a larger than life presence that makes it virtually impossible to dislike the man - at least when you're standing face to face with him.
Needless to say it came as no surprise to me when I read in the Wall Street Journal this week that former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush have agreed to another joint appearance this winter in Florida. But the news puzzled others who expected President Bush to harbor ill will against President Clinton for a whole host of reasons, not the least of which is Clinton beating W's dad in the 1992 Presidential election.
But perhaps during their last joint public appearance in May (when the two were said to have "bonded" in the quality post-presidency time they spent together) George W. Bush found Clinton to be the same charming devil that I encountered at a public appearance just outside of Chicago a short while ago.
Immediately likeable and ingratiating, the only thing off-putting about Clinton was his suit jacket that was drenched in sweat from standing in a spotlight for 90 minutes during a longwinded speech. Although I only noticed the soaked blazer when I put my arm around him for a photo, I soon realized that a lot of people would be honored to have presidential sweat drizzled upon them. I certainly was.
So has George W. Bush been similarly won over by Bill Clinton's sweaty charms? Well, for the record, the new BFFs will reportedly each be paid $150,000 for the upcoming appearance in Florida. So perhaps the paychecks have done more to cultivate this "friendship" than anything else.
