Another interesting experience we had was watching the Twins practice on back field B, behind the stadium. As I stated in my Lee County Sports Complex review, the access to the players and coaches is incredible during spring training. I even got to stand close to the B field dugout, right next to manager Ron Gardenhire. During this time, I was able to chat with the longtime Twins manager for a few minutes. After a period of shooting the breeze with Gardy, an interesting thing happened. While taking batting practice, Twins center fielder Denard Span hit a line drive that struck my daughter in the head. Gardenhire and I both screamed, “oh my.” My daughter went to the ground, but quickly got up and was luckily just fine. Span and a Twins trainer ran over to check on her. Span felt very bad about what happened, reminding my daughter that he hit his mom with a foul ball during last season’s spring training. After they took my daughter into the dugout, Span provided her with his bat and a game ball. A scary moment at first, turned out to be an experience we will remember for years.
