In today's world of cookie-cutter artists, performers like John Legend stand out among the crowd.
Ever since I first saw John Legend on stage at a Dilated Peoples concert and asked myself, "Who's that guy on the keyboard?", I was a fan.
Back then, he was relatively unknown. He hadn't even released a solo album yet. But I knew there were going to be big things happening for this singer. And did BIG things ever happen!
John Legend earned six Grammy awards, and an award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame! He was touring all over the world, gaining more fame and making more money than most can dream about.
By the time he was set to release his third studio album, "Evolver", there was really no need for him to do radio tours to promote it. After all, you never hear about huge artists stopping by any radio stations unless it's a Top 10 market.
That's why I was both surprised and ridiculously happy when I found out John Legend would be making a stop through Fresno. And, even better, I would be conducting the interview.
The day came and we had a room full of listeners to serve as a live studio audience. There were two barstools set up in front of the room: one for me, one for Legend. And the interview would be LIVE on the air. Pretty cool, right?
He stepped into the room (right on time) and the interview was perfect! He was smart, funny, and it seemed like he appreciated everything I had to say.
The highlight, though, was when I pulled out my childhood Casio keyboard and, without missing a beat, John Legend performed "Ordinary People" on the spot.
A very cool, very talented musician and an interview I will always consider one of my all-time favorites.
