I recently attended the Utah State Bar Convention held in Sun Valley, Idaho. Our distinquished guest was Associate Justice Clarence Thomas of the US Supreme Court. Following his remarks to a large conference room filled with lawyers and their families, he took the time to answer questions from the audience. What was most impressive to me was how he handled a question from a young girl who looked to be about 10 years old. She simply asked the Justice whether it was fun to make such important decisions. He acknowledged her by saying what a good question that was and then answered by saying that what he does is a lot like taking a test in school that you have studied really hard for. While it's not necessarily "fun" while you're taking the test, there is a great sense of accomplishment when you're finished and you get it right. The little girl understood what he meant because he thoughtfully crafted his response to her question based on her own life experience. He made her feel important and treated her like they were the only two people in the room. I was grateful to be present to witness such a important man demonstrate both kindness and wisdom in his response to a little girl. Hopefully, she will never forget her exchange with one of the most important men in the world. I know I never will.
