Last weekend, Hall of Fame baseball player Dave Winfield was seen walking through the lobby of the Minneapolis Marriott City Center in downtown Minneapolis. This sighting took place a few hours after Winfield attended the Minnesota Gophers vs. USC Trojans basketball game at Williams Arena, the Gophers’ on campus arena.
Ironically, Winfield was staying at the Marriott City Center on the same night as the Denver Broncos, who were in Minneapolis to play the Vikings the very next day.
Winfield is a local legend in Minnesota. He grew up in St. Paul, starring in three sports at St. Paul Central High School. Winfield continued his athletic career at the University of Minnesota, where he played both baseball and basketball.
Amazingly, Winfield was drafted by the MLB’s San Diego Padres, the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings, even though he never played one minute of football at the NCAA level.
It must have been a thrill for Gopher fans to see one of the school’s all-time greats at the game.
During his baseball career, Winfield collected more than 3,000 hits, while hitting 465 home runs. He was elected into the Hall of Fame in 2001.
Currently, Winfield can be seen as an analyst on ESPN.
