I have met Mel Gibson on two occasions - both in the same day and roughly one hour apart.

Backstage at NBC during one of Mel's many well-received Tonight Show with Jay Leno appearances, the first encounter with Mel was
extraordinarily brief. I managed to say hello and received an acknowledgement via head nod from the iconic actor. But what was most telling about Mel were his exceptionally entertaining interactions with Tonight Show staffers and other NBC personnel who gathered backstage.

Utterly charming and goofy, Mel Gibson appeared more of a college frat boy than a poised, Oscar worthy actor and director.

That was before the taping.

Either Jay Leno rubbed Mel the wrong way or Mel Gibson has a split personality disorder. The person Mel appeared to be one hour later represented a total reversal from the affable, goofball who had earlier roamed the halls fo NBC. Gruff, stern, and asking which way was the quickest exit with the fewest people around, Mel Gibson's second impression was certainly not as favorable as his first.

Some in the media have speculated that Mel Gibson has a split personality disorder. Playing armchair psychologist based on my backstage encounter and observation, I would definitely concur with that hypothetical diagnosis.

The evil side of his split personality has clearly taken over during the last couple years.

Considering the guy got his breakout role because of a bar fight and made a career out of playing loose cannons, I guess we shouldn't be surprised--I don't think that kind of on-screen intensity comes out of nowhere.
