Last weekend, some friends and I traveled to Austin, Texas to see a Longhorns football game at Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium. Texas hosted in-state rival Texas Tech.
Right away, I could see the passion their fans have. Our hotel, which was about a 15-20 minute walk from the stadium, was filled with Longhorns fans. This means that there are so many Longhorns fans outside of Austin and shows how big of a following the team has. The hotel was not even the closest to the stadium.
On our way to the game, it was fun seeing fans tailgating in garage ramps, flat parking lots and on street corners, before they all flooded into the stadium.
Once inside, it was very unique and huge. We sat four rows from the top in the upper deck and could not believe that we had to go up 10 escalators to get there. After that, we still had to walk up 46 rows. Once we were all the way up there, we had a really nice view. We could see everything, including the Austin skyline and the highway that runs next to the stadium.
The fans were interested in the game, but because it was a blowout by halftime, during the second half, fans perhaps were not as interested as they could have been. The final score was 52-20. The good thing for us was that some fans left, so we were able to move closer to the action and sit in a few different spots.
It was a fun experience and I'm glad my friends and I got to see a game at a powerhouse school like Texas.
