During this weekend’s Northern Trust Open at the legendary Riviera Country Club in the toney Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, many of the participating PGA golfers and corporate sponsors are staying at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica. This luxury property is located four miles southwest of the country club’s main entrance.
While spending time in the Fairmont on Thursday night, I walked right past PGA and European Tour staple Sergio Garcia. The Spaniard appeared to have just returned from the course, as he was still sporting the TaylorMade hat and Adidas shirt worn during his opening round 69. Garcia is currently involved with the “2012 TaylorMade Driver Love Photo Sweepstakes.”
Garcia has been a familiar sight in the golf world since the 1999 PGA Championship, when a then 19-year-old Garcia dueled with a 23-year-old Tiger Woods, in one of the most memorable final rounds in history. Tiger won the event, but Garcia absolutely established himself during the famous weekend at Medinah Country Club, outside Chicago.
Garcia has won a total of 17 professional events throughout his career, seven in the US and 10 in Europe.
It was fun bumping into someone so known for swinging a golf club on two continents. It’s crazy to fathom that Garcia is 13 years past his still famous debut onto the world stage at Medinah. How time flies!
