If you've read any of my other articles about meeting hip hop artists, it's easy to figure out that I love West Coast rap. Always have, always will. And the more "ol' school", the better.
It's amazing that someone like Too $hort has been in the game for so long rappin' about pretty much the same stuff: money and women. That takes talent to keep lyrics fresh enough for 20 albums.
Too $hort came by the studio in 2006 to promote his 18th CD, Blow the Whistle. There was no way I was gonna pass up the opportunity to interview this guy live on the air. A couple weeks before he came by, I put in many hours editing his greatest singles and album cuts to play during his visit.
From the start, I could tell that he was more humble and open than most artists who have come through. For being in the industry for so long, he could have easily just sat there answering questions with short answers with a cocky attitude.
But he was energetic, funny, and honest during the entire interview. He even talked about the rise and fall of the "Hyphy" movement in the Bay area and credited Mac Dre for leading the way, which I respected.
It's cool how a 1-hour interview can make a big Too $hort fan like me into a HUGE Too $hort fan.
