Wednesday afternoon at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Anaheim, a sports fan was treated to the rare situation of witnessing two professional teams within the halls of the very same hotel. Coincidently, the two franchises were also the runner-ups in their respective leagues’ most recent championship series.
A few minutes prior to 1:00 pm, the Vancouver Canucks arrived at the property in advance of that evening’s exhibition contest with the Anaheim Ducks. Honda Center, the Ducks home arena, is located two miles from the Doubletree. The hockey club was heading into the hotel for a period of rest prior to what turned out to be a 3-2 loss to their conference rivals. The game marked the season debuts of Daniel and Henrik Sedin, as well as goaltender Roberto Luongo.
Take a look at video of the Sedin brothers and a portion of their Vancouver teammates heading into the hotel. The defending Western Conference champs open the season at home versus the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 6.
The defending American League champion Texas Rangers were the other second place team spending time in the hotel. Prior to their season concluding game with the Angels, manger Ron Washington and pitcher Alexi Ogando were photographed waiting for their respective rides to Angel Stadium.
A year after losing to the Giants in the World Series, Texas was able to make a return trip to the top of the AL West. The Canucks hope to follow the Rangers lead, since going down to the Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals last spring.
