One of the highlights of Thursday at NBA All-Star Weekend in LA was the unveiling of a Jerry West statue outside of Staples Center. Among the many luminaries in attendance was the “Great One” Wayne Gretzky. Number 99, along with Magic Johnson, Oscar de la Hoya and the late Chick Hearn have already been honored with sculptures outside of the downtown Los Angeles arena. Gretzky and his wife Janet joined the festivities on Thursday, as the exclusive group of Staples Center statue honorees grew by one. Has there ever been a player more synonymous with his sport than Wayne Gretzky? His trade from the Edmonton Oilers to the LA Kings still stands as one of the most monumental transactions in history.
