I rarely pass up an opportunity to meet new people, especially celebrities who fascinate me from a far.A few years ago, while in Los Angeles on business, I found myself at a diner and admiring from a distance a legendary TV star from the 1970's and 80's - "Laverne and Shirley" star Cindy Williams.
Hoping to introduce myself and maybe get a photograph (because I'm a dork like that) I didn't want to interrupt her meal so I figured I would have time to wash my hands in the men’s room before going over to introduce myself. Unfortunately, when I got back, she was gone.
As bummed out as I was, I found myself an hour later at a Starbucks where none other than Cindy Williams was similarly in line for an overpriced beverage like I was. Sadly, just moments before I could introduce myself, Cindy spotted someone who must have been a long-lost relative. As Cindy and this mysterious unnamed woman greeted with hugs and tears, I simply couldn't bring myself to interrupt their love fest. Once again, I missed an opportunity. And by this time, I'm thinking its just not meant for me to meet Cindy Williams.
So I get back to the convention at my hotel - the reason I'm in town to begin with - and I rejoin the broadcaster’s expo hall and guess who I find myself seated with at the advertisers table? Cindy Williams. This time, I got my picture with her and enjoyed a very long conversation with a woman who turned out to be as sweet and friendly as anyone you could hope to share coffee with. Meeting Cindy Williams was definitely worth the wait.
