A Costly Soccer Celebration In Iran
Saturday, popular Iranian soccer team Persepolis scored a goal. During the brief celebration, defender Mohammad Nosrati playfully slapped teammate Sheys Rezaei on the behind and let’s just say that the national soccer federation did not take kindly to this "immoral" act.
Monday, both players were suspended and docked 15 percent of their annual salary. Longtime Persepolis coach Mahmoud Khordbin was dismissed for not reporting the “incident” to the federation.
The match was nationally televised and Iranian cleric Jalal Yahyazadeh, who is a member of Parliament in the Islamic Republic, was quoted by the Iranian news agency ISNA as saying "this shameless act had upset, angered and outraged" all sports fans in Iran.
Soccer is the most popular sport in Iran, although women are not permitted to attend games. At least these players have not been imprisoned....yet.
