Heisman Trophy Candidates: The Long Shots
5. Tyrann Mathieu, LSU
The 5-8, 175 pound sophomore cornerback is the most exciting defensive player in the nation and is positively electric returning punts. But, the Heisman largely goes to quarterbacks and running backs, defenders are rarely considered. In fact, the last Heisman winner who played on the defensive side was Charles Woodson, then of Michigan in 1997.
In his first season as a starter, Mathieu, a native of New Orleans, was selected as the SEC defensive player of the year.
Mathieu and his Tiger teammates will battle Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans.
4. Montee Ball, Wisconsin
Ball rushed for 1,759 yards and a startling 32 touchdowns (a Big Ten record) for the Badgers this season, averaging 6.4 yards per carry and 135 yards per game. The 5-11, 210 pound native of Wentzville, Missouri also tallied 18 touchdowns in 2010 as a sophomore.
Ball leads Wisconsin into the Rose Bowl and a date with highflying Oregon.
3. Robert Griffin III, Baylor
Robert Griffin III is surging towards the top of Heisman voting with fabulous performances in late-season wins by Baylor over Oklahoma and Texas. Born in Japan, Griffin III was a celebrated quarterback and hurdler in Copperas Cove, Texas.
The junior QB threw for 3,501 yards in 2010 and 3,998 yards this year. The 6-2, 220 pounder also rushed for 1,279 yards in the past two seasons and his total offense over his Baylor career is over 12,000 yards.
Mathieu and Ball have no shot at winning the Heisman, but Griffin definitely does.
TOMORROW, THE HEISMAN FAVORITES
