How will Pavlik do?
By Bruce Tenen - Fri, 2011-04-22 10:00
A three-month old octopus is being trained to succeed the deceased, world-famous Paul, the psychic octopus who became a sensation by picking eight consecutive winners during the World Cup tournament in South Africa last year. Paul died last October at the age of two in Oberhausen, Germany, where he lived. Pavlik, the replacement octopus, resides in a Ukraine zoo. The Ukraine is co-hosting the 2012 European Championships with neighboring Poland. Pavlik's name was not randomly chosen as it is the diminutive of Pavel, the Slavic equivalent of the name Paul. Pavlik came to the Ukraine from Singapore and has already begun his training, learning to open boxes of mussels and other goodies in his tank.
