Oh No – FOX Awarded Future World Cup Broadcast Rights
By Bruce Tenen - Thu, 2011-10-27 07:00
ESPN did a wonderful job of covering the last few World Cups. So, naturally, the soccer tournaments were awarded to FOX beginning in 2015, as the ESPN deal runs through the men's World Cup of 2014. Terms of the contract were not available. The FOX contract runs through 2022.
The 2010 World Cup on ESPN and ABC averaged more than 3 million viewers and the Spain versus Netherlands final drew a huge audience of 15.5 million watchers.
Can you stomach a World Cup filled with promotions for their upcoming television lineup or blowhards like Tim McCarver analyzing the action and strategy? I didn't think so.
