It looked like a delicious match-up when it was announced that Oregon (ranked #3 nationally) would meet Louisiana State (#4) in the season opener in Arlington, Texas, on September 3.

Now, the game has more subplots than an Agatha Christie mystery.  

Over the weekend, the Ducks very quietly announced that the major culprit in an ongoing NCAA investigation, Lache Seastrunk, had been granted his unconditional release from his scholarship because he was "homesick". 

The NCAA has been looking into the role of a Texas scout who was paid $25,000 by Oregon, in getting Houston-area players, such as Seastrunk, to Eugene.  

LSU coach Les Miles explained to the media Saturday that four or more unidentified Bayou Bengals, including star quarterback Jordan Jefferson, were involved over the weekend at a local bar called Shady's, after being in a fight with members of the military.  

Baton Rouge police say that there have been no arrests or charges yet. But, they confirmed that four people were hospitalized after the brawl and none of them were on the LSU team. The four all indicated that they intended to press charges.  

Miles told the media that he has already begun to discipline the team. 

"I can tell you that the last couple of days have been miserable for us," said Miles.  "We have been involved in behavior that's unacceptable to me and our team.  Guys broke team rules and broke curfew.  I can assure you that this will not happen again. I can tell you that there's a remorseful team here."  

Maybe, they should move the game to a local penitentiary.
