Remember Jose Ortiz? He’s In Big Trouble
By Bruce Tenen - Sun, 2011-07-17 14:00
Jose Ortiz is a 6-10 forward, who starred at Oregon State and was the first player from Puerto Rico to be picked in the NBA Draft. After two seasons with the Utah Jazz, Ortiz had a long and successful basketball career in Europe.
On June 29, Ortiz was arrested in his hometown of Cayey, Puerto Rico, when federal police seized more than 200 marijuana plants and 40 rounds of assault-rifle ammunition at his house. Last week, he was charged with intent to distribute marijuana and faces a minimum of five years in prison, if found guilty.
Ortiz, who played for Puerto Rico in four Olympic Games, was represented by a public defender because he said he could not afford an attorney.
Sounds like he's ready to make a return to the NBA.
