While Los Angeles Lakers games usually serve as the sports world's equivalent to the Academy Awards, last weekend this distinction moved north three miles up the 110 Freeway from Staples Center to Dodger Stadium.
The Los Angeles Dodgers played host to their second ever interleague matchup against the New York Yankees. The two teams that used to share the biggest city now lay claim to being the marquee baseball draws in the nation’s two largest markets. Besides boasting the famous “NY” and “LA” logos on their hats, both teams are synonymous for their iconic pinstripe and “Dodger Blue” uniforms.
Simply put, the names Yankees and Dodgers are as American as apple pie and Disneyland. The two teams have played eleven times in the World Series.
New York and Los Angeles are forever linked by their shared stature in the world, particularly by those who make up the entertainment industry. This weekend once again displayed this very real situation.
While Jack Nicholson is undoubtedly the most famous LA basketball fan, his baseball loyalty firmly remains with his hometown Yankees. Nicholson was born in New York City and raised in nearby Neptune City, New Jersey. The legendary actor was a very partisan spectator during the series.
The lead crew of HBO’s ‘Entourage’ (Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon and Jerry Ferrara) acted out the show’s signature theme, as these four New Yorkers were also present in LA.
While the best of New York made their mark on Dodger Stadium, one of LA’s greatest bands provided fans with a riveting performance of the national anthem prior to last Friday’s game.
