This Week's Top 6 Re-Tweeted Sports Links

Twitter logo sports colorsAh, what's not to love about October?  The MLB playoffs are in full swing, the weekends are packed with NCAA and NFL football, and the NHL season is just ramping up.

Yet, only one of the top six sports-related re-tweeted links had anything to do with this week's games. Instead, it was all about Tiger Woods, a European Court of Justice case, and--as always--the NBA.  No matter what the season or the state of the league, NBA fans have long been the among the most enthusiastic and prolific tweeters, a fact not lost on the NBA-licensed merchandisers who continue to pick up the off-season slack with a steady offering of new products and promotions.

So here's our Thursday roundup of the past week's top 6 re-tweeted sports-related links:

Mayweather Floors Ortiz, Then Goes Off On Merchant

Mayweather's knockout punch to Ortiz

As if the jaw-dropping finish of Saturday's Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Victor Ortiz welterweight bout wasn't controversial enough, the matchup that took place afterwards between Mayweather and veteran HBO commentator Larry Merchant definitely added some more fuel to the fire:

Jeff Blauser’s Antique-Intensive Atlanta Area Home (Photos)

Take a look at the luxurious photos.

Both Jeff and his wife Andee collaborated with designers and architects, taking "a couple of years" to finalize the plans and weigh in on design decisions.

"Jeff wanted clean lines, minimal trim, nothing fussy," said one of the architects on the team.

These plans didn't exclude plenty of expensively aged finishes including: antique rough-hewn beams, oiled wood floors, quarter-sawn oak paneling and Venetian plaster.

We wouldn't call his cartwheel "perfect", but the forward-roll-shooter-fingers combination comes pretty close...

A Tribute To "Mr. Clutch"

The unveiling of the new Jerry West statue drew so many sports legends and luminaries to the Staples Center tribute (see our glimpes of Kurt Rambis, James Worthy, Wayne Gretzky, Bill Russell and Bill Walton...) that we couldn't resist a little tribute of our own.

Bill Murray's Pebble Beach Win Makes Us Want To Do the Gopher Dance

D.A. Points and Bill Murray headshots

Until the 2011 AT&T Pro Am golf tournament at Pebble Beach, not many people had ever heard of D. A. Points, who had yet to win a PGA tournament since he went pro in 1999.  But when you're paired with Bill Murray, people tend to take notice no matter who you are.  Famous for his fabulous hats and fairway chatter, Murray's been entertaining golf spectators at this tournament since he started playing it in 1992, although, like Points, he had yet to win one.

Post-Superbowl Talk Show Roundup: Matthews 2, Rodgers 1

It's not unusual for certain members of the winning Super Bowl team to be seen on the talk show circuit during the week after the Super Bowl.   Aaron Rodgers' appearance on Late Night with David Letterman was pretty much a given, considering the show's long tradition of booking the winning team's quarterback as its Monday-after headliner guest.

But it's less common for the more popular guest to be the team's linebacker.   Admittedly we're only talking about three total appearances here, and Matthews does have a product to hawk now.  Which might explain why he was on the Ellen Degeneres show , since women still buy the majority of men's shampoo (especially when someone who looks like Matthews is endorsing it!)

Star-Spotting at the Super Bowl: The Steakhouse Approach

upscale meal of steak, wine, champagne, martiniIt may be all about the football, but there's no denying that the Super Bowl has become famous for attracting the Famous.

In fact, there's probably no other single venue where you'll find a more diverse cross-section of superstars in one place at the same time.  (Think about it:  at what other public spectacle are you more likely to find as many Hollywood A-Listers, Hall-of-Famers, Rock Stars, Pop Stars, Media Personalities, High-Profile Entreprenuers, or Former Presidents--just to name a few?)

Caroline Wozniaki "Crazy and the Yellow Panty"

By now everyone knows that Caroline Wozniaki defeated Maria Sharapova in what was, for many, the most visually appealing girl-on-girl tennis match of the US Open.   Or as fan AnaIvanovicLosing, (the delightful creator of this video and it's "Crazy and the Yellow Panty" title) puts it:  "Beauty Caroline Wozniacki defeat Queen Maria Sharapova in the AWESOME match!"  The video can only be viewed on YouTube, but it's worth the jump!  Click on the play arrow below to access the link:
