Rick Pitino 2 titles with 2 different schools Monday night, the nation’s top team, the Louisville Cardinals, play the Michigan Wolverines for the NCAA championship, in Atlanta. The favored Cardinals are looking to win the school’s third title, with their previous victories taking place in 1980 and 1986. The Wolverines are aiming for the program’s second trophy. Michigan’s lone championship took place in 1989.

Syracuse 5 Final Fours, Michigan 7 Final FoursSaturday night, the 30-9 Syracuse Orange take on the 30-7 Michigan Wolverines, in a Final Four semifinal matchup at Atlanta. For Syracuse, this is their first Final Four appearance since 2003 and fifth overall. In 2003, Jim Boeheim and Carmelo Anthony led the Upstate New York power to its only NCAA Championship in school history.

Richard Pitino named head coach at MinnesotaAfter a fairly exhaustive coaching search, Richard Pitino was hired as the head coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball team. Pitino, who is taking over for the recently fired Tubby Smith, is the 30-year-old son of legendary Louisville coach Rick Pitino.

Initially, the Nationals struggled to win games and draw fans, while still very much looking like the same small market team they had hoped to leave behind in Montreal. Things finally started to look up when the team selected highly touted pitcher Stephen Strasburg, with the first pick in the 2009 draft. Strasburg made a splash during his 2010 debut, before blowing out his elbow and enduring Tommy John surgery. Strasburg went on to miss most of the 2011 season, while pitching on a strict timetable, during his return in 2012.
