Mark Messier guaranteeMonday night, the New Jersey Devils host the New York Rangers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, with the favored Rangers leading the series 2-1.

The Rangers have won four of the previous five meetings.

The last time New York and New Jersey played in the Eastern Conference Finals was in 1994, when hockey legend Mark Messier made the famous “guarantee,” with his Rangers team trailing in the series 3-2.

Dale Tallon and playoff beardsSportswriter Ian Hamilton of the Regina (Saskatchewan) Leader-Post had a funny take on Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon’s opinion of playoff beards.

Henrik Sedin and Canucks Off Day Practice in LA Coming off of last season’s disappointing loss to the Boston Bruins in a hard fought seven-game Stanley Cup Finals series, the Vancouver Canucks did not miss a beat during this regular season, posting an NHL leading 118 points, while earning the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

On the other side of the spectrum, the eighth seeded Los Angeles Kings finished the regular season with 95 points on 40 victories, 11 less wins than the total compiled by the boys from British Columbia.

Unfortunately for Vancouver, regular season excellence has turned into postseason consternation, as the Canucks find themselves down 3-0, heading into what could be an elimination game Wednesday night at Staples Center.

Salmon tossing honors Garrett Paquette in VancouverDiehard hockey fans traditionally have been known to toss sea creatures onto the ice, with the most notable example being the famous octopi of Detroit. In recent months, Vancouver Canucks followers may have set the bar a bit higher by conceiving a brand new tradition.

The latest example of this took place when the Canucks hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday. With about four minutes remaining in the third period, while the players were awaiting a faceoff on one end of the ice, a five-pound salmon was tossed onto the other end of the Rogers Arena rink.
