2011 FIFA Women's World CupJapan's exciting victory over the USA on penalty kicks brought ESPN a huge national rating of 8.6, the second highest TV rating ever for women's soccer, trailing only the 1999 World Cup final between the USA and China on ABC, which garnered a 13.3. 

By comparison, the final round of the British Open on ESPN & ABC had a paltry 2.8 rating. Interestingly, the highest TV markets included: Baltimore, Washington DC and Norfolk.

Speaking of Barcelona and Real Madrid, the two great Spanish rivals met in the finals of the Copa del Rey (the King's Cup) and Madrid scored a dramatic overtime goal to capture the Spanish national tournament 1-0 in Valencia. The team immediately flew back to the Spanish capital and the all-night celebrations began with players riding around the old city center in an open-air, double-decker bus, saluting its jubilant fans after winning the cup for the first time in eighteen years. Drop

David Beckham Choosing Royalty Over Galaxy

On April 29, the much-ballyhooed Royal Wedding will take place in Westminster Abbey and Los Angeles will be represented. When Prince William and Kate Middleton tie the knot in London, David Beckham and his wife Victoria (Posh Girl Spice) will be among the invited guests in spite of the fact that Beckham's team, the LA Galaxy, also have an important game that weekend.

Landon Donovan embraces his role as face of US Soccer

Wednesday, the United States advanced to the World Cup round of 16 after defeating Algeria 1-0.  In desperate need of a goal,  Landon Donovan netted a miraculous shot in minute 91 of the match. On the verge of elimination, Donovan's late game composure resulted in a perfectly placed follow of a Rais M'Bolhi save.

Mia Hamm can not only dance on the soccer field, but on a bar as well. 

It was the night of the inaugural WUSA game (Women’s Professional Soccer League) featuring the Washington Freedom and the greatest of them all, Mia Hamm. The Washington Freedom won the inaugural game at RFK Stadium, and afterwards, the team headed over to Cafe Citron in Washington DC, to celebrate.  And celebrate they did.
