Don Mattingly Autograph Signing For Road Fans |Photo

Lance Martinez from My Detroit Sports provides this original photo of Marlins manager Don Mattingly signing autographs outside of a Detroit hotel.

As a player, Mattingly was one of baseball’s best first baseman in the 1980’s, spending his entire career with the Yankees. Unfortunately for Mattingly, his tenure with the Pinstrips (1982-1995) came at a down period for the iconic franchise, with Mattingly only seeing the postseason once, during his last season of 1995. The Indiana native was a six-time all-star, nine-time gold glove winner and the 1985 AL MVP.

Mattingly would later serve as a coach for the Yankees, before becoming the Dodgers manager in 2011. Mattingly led LA to the playoffs three times, but never advanced to the World Series. After last season, the Dodgers and Mattingly parted ways, with Mattingly becoming the Marlins skipper.

Going into Thursday's action, Mattingly has the Marlins sitting in second place in the NL East, amid a 55-46 record.

Here are several other behind the scenes stories, chronicling Mattingly autograph efforts over the years
