Jeremy Affeldt Severely Injured After Barbeque Incident
The San Francisco Giants have suffered many injuries this season to key players including Buster Posey, Brian Wilson, Barry Zito, Nate Schierholtz, Freddy Sanchez and Jonathan Sanchez. But, the latest injury issue is weird even by their standards.
Left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt was having a fine season, with a 2.63 ERA and a team leading 67 appearances. Now, he has probably thrown his last pitch for the Giants because his $5 million option for next year will almost certainly be declined.
Last Thursday, Affeldt was hosting a backyard barbecue and tried to open a package of frozen hamburger patties with a sharp knife. He managed to puncture his right hand so severely, he suffered nerve damage that required surgery.
Affeldt told the Associated Press, "I should have used hot water. If I had used a butter knife, nothing would have happened.
