Gardenhire is in his first year with the Tigers, after taking three years off from managing, since being dismissed as Twins manager in 2014. During his time in Minnesota, Gardenhire had tremendous regular season success, earning six AL Central titles, amid winning a Twins record 1,068 games.

Gardenhire is credited with turning around the small market Twins, transforming them into a perennial playoff team, after an extended stretch of poor play in the late 90’s. Partially because his teams were not as talented as the ones they often faced, the now 60-year-old only posted a 6-21 playoff record, including an ongoing 12-game losing streak.

During the early days of his tenure with the Tigers, Detroit stands at 15-21, good for third place in the AL Central.
