Serra High School San Mateo Has Produced Some Incredible Athletes

Junipero Serra High School San MateoJunipero Serra High School, located in the San Francisco Bay Area suburb of San Mateo, has not just produced a string of famous athletes, the all boys Catholic institution serves as the alma mater to some of the most prominent figures in the history of their respective sport.

Situated 21 miles south of downtown San Francisco, in the northern part of Silicon Valley, Junipero Serra draws from an interesting mix of families deeply rooted in the athletic, intellectual and corporate landscapes of this suburban area also known as The Peninsula.

The school's three most famous alumni are Patriots QB Tom Brady, controversial baseball superstar Barry Bonds and former Steelers great Lynn Swann.

That's right, Barry Bonds high school is the exact same as the great Mr. Brady.

Brady graduated from Junipero Serra in 1995. In addition to his success on the football field, which earned him a scholarship to Michigan, Brady was also drafted as a catcher by the then Montreal Expos.

The three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP grew up in the city of San Mateo.

Barry Bonds was a 1982 graduate of Junipero Serra. Prior to setting the single season and career homerun record for his hometown San Francisco Giants, Bonds was a three-sport star (baseball, football, basketball) at the school. Years before allegations of steroid use came to the forefront, Bonds batted .467 during his senior year, turning down the opportunity to sign with the Giants out of high school, instead electing to attend Arizona State University. Bonds began his MLB career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning two MVP's before coming back home.

While his father Bobby Bonds played in the Major Leagues, mostly with the Giants, Bonds grew up five miles north of San Mateo in the Peninsula city of San Carlos.

NFL Hall of Famer Lynn Swann graduated from Junipero Serra in 1970. The four-time Super Bowl champion WR with the Pittsburgh Steelers starred in both football and track & field during his high school career. Swann attended the University of Southern California before spending his adult life in Western Pennsylvania, where he has parlayed his football career into successful stints in both broadcasting and politics. In 2006, Swann was the GOP nominee for the governorship of Pennsylvania, losing to incumbent Ed Rendell by 20 percent.

Swann grew up in the neighboring suburb of Foster City, California.
