Fan Photo Submission: Dikembe Mutombo

Kaplan Mobray, award-winning motivational speaker and author of the 10Ks of Personal Branding, sends along this photo with basketball hall of famer Dikembe Mutombo. The pair’s encounter took place at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel.

Mutombo was one of the best defensive players of his generation, earning four Defensive Player of the Year awards, while being a member of the NBA All-Defensive First Team on three occasions. The Georgetown alum, who played in the NBA from 1991-2009, ranks second all-time in blocked shots, only behind Hakeem Olajuwon.

The eight-time All-Star averaged 9.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game, during stints with six teams.

Mutombo, a native of the Republic of Congo, is also very well known for his humanitarian work. He started the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, which helps improve living conditions in his native country. Mutombo’s charitable endeavors also include involvement with the Special Olympics.
