Coach K At Amateur Basketball Event (Video)
Every year, many of the nation's top high school recruits play in the Elite Youth Basketball League, a series of tournaments played throughout the country. Because of the level of athletes present at these events, virtually every big name college coach is on hand to assess the talent.
Saturday, legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski was seen taking in the action in the Twin Cities suburb of Eagan, Minnesota. As expected, Coach K was very businesslike, as he scouted the list of potential Duke recruits. One of the players Coach K had his eye on was the nation's top recruit, Jabari Parker of the Chicago Mac Irvin Fire team. Not surprisingly, Parker is in the mix to play in Durham.
Many of the fans and participating players were in awe of seeing the legendary coach. This was especially a treat for the people of Minnesota, as it is not too often that Krzyzewski visits the state, while attending an event open to the public.
With that said, Coach K has encountered great professional success in Minnesota, as two of his three national titles have taken place at Minneapolis' Metrodome (1992, 2001).
Before coaching at Duke, Krzyzewski played for Army, under the great Bob Knight. He served as an assistant coach with Knight at Indiana, before coaching at Army from 1975-1980.
Since joining Duke in 1980, Krzyzewski has had an incredible run of success. He has led Duke to 11 Final Fours, winning four NCAA championships, while producing many NBA players and creating a solid college coaching tree.
Coach K's 79 NCAA Tournament victories are the most in NCAA history. This past season, Krzyewski surpassed his mentor Bob Knight by winning his 903rd game, also the most in NCAA division 1 history.
The Duke head man currently stands at 927 career wins.
Krzyzewski has also found success in international competition. He led Team USA to a gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, while also winning gold medals at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship in Las Vegas and the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.
