SMU Scores 28 Points In 40-Minute Game

UAB defeats SMU 47-28Wednesday, Southern Methodist University hosted Alabama-Birmingham at Moody Coliseum in Dallas. Competing in two 20-minute halves, while playing with a 35-second shot clock, the Mustangs scored 28 whole points for the game.

That's right, 28 points in a 40-minute game.

SMU shot 8 of 46 (17 percent) from the field and 3 for 29 (10 percent) from three-point territory, losing to the Blazers 47-28.

SMU forward Robert Nyakundi led his team in scoring with a solid nine points. This point total is far less pedestrian than it appears, when considering that the senior from nearby Arlington tallied nearly a third of his team's overall production for the entire evening.

Last weekend, the last time the Mustangs took the floor prior to Wednesday, the squad was only able to muster 39 points, in a 43-39 loss to Rice.

To put this in perspective, Matt Doherty's team has scored a combined 67 points in their last 80 minutes of basketball.

Is this really what the alumni of the wealthy Dallas institution had in mind when hiring the former Notre Dame and North Carolina head coach?  Our guess is not by a long shot.
