Enough Of This College Football Signing Day Nonsense?

Mike Bianchi on soft verbals and national signing dayIt sounds like Mike Bianchi, the outstanding columnist for the Orlando Sentinel, has had quite enough of football signing day in SEC country. Last week he wrote:

"I'm not saying I've been inundated with college football recruiting talk this week, but when my daughter asked me the other day if I would help her with her homework, I gave her a 'soft verbal."

A “soft verbal” is when a high school recruit gives a school a nonbinding verbal declaration of his intention to play ball there, while continuing to actively visit other campuses on official recruiting visits.

In other words, when a player declares his interest in a given school, prior to actually signing a National Letter of Intent, it means absolutely positively nothing.
