49ers & Packers Renewing Playoff Acquaintances
Saturday night, the 11-4-1 San Francisco 49ers host the 11-5 Green Bay Packers, in an NFC divisional playoff game. The 49ers earned a wild card round bye, while the Packers beat the Minnesota Vikings 24-10, last week in Green Bay, advancing to the divisional round.
In Week 1, the 49ers took care of the Packers at Lambeau Field, 30-22. With the exception of that meeting, the Packers have owned the 49ers over the years.
Since 1995, Green Bay has won 13 of the last 15 contests in this series, which also includes a 4-1 postseason mark. However, the last time these teams played in a playoff game was the memorable 30-27, 49ers victory at San Francisco. The game is best remembered for “The Catch II,” Terrell Owens' last second, game-winning touchdown.
Even without the greats of the 1990's rivalry (Jerry Rice, Brett Favre and Steve Young), it is nice to have these prominent NFC franchises meeting once again in a January game.
