The Eagles Game & Practice Venues Have Come A Long Ways

Lincoln Financial Field vs Veterans StadiumDuring much of the Philadelphia Eagles 20th century existence, the franchise held the distinction of possessing among the worst gameday venues and practice facility accommodations in all of professional sports. Remember the universally infamous Veterans Stadium? From 1971 to 2003, the Eagles played home games in the less than venerable structure, while also conducting practices on fields in the stadium’s parking lot and officing out of one of the ballpark’s cramped indoor corridors.

From a practice and administrative standpoint, things changed for the Eagles in 2001, when the team moved one mile down the road to the state-of-the-art NovaCare Complex.  Then, in 2004, the franchise began playing games at the brand new Lincoln Financial Field. From this point forward, the entirety of the Eagles football operation has stood solidly amid the creature comforts of the 21st century.

Lincoln Financial Field is part of the mega South Philadelphia Sports Complex, which includes the home venue for every local professional team, as well as XFINITY Live! Philadelphia, a sports themed dining and entertainment complex. In fact, the big four sports leagues’ Philadelphia franchises have all called this complex home (via a variety of active and demolished stadiums) since 1971.

Located 5 miles south of Center City, Philadelphia, The Linc possesses a seating capacity of just shy of 70,000, amid containing 172 luxury suites, 2 club lounges, 2 massive end zone HD video boards, 1,186 HD TV’s and full stadium Wi-Fi.

While the old “Vet” was synonymous with rat issues, an in stadium court for unruly fans, unending bathroom lines, substandard player training facilities and perhaps the most dangerous AstroTurf playing surface in the history of American sports, the Linc and nearby NovaCare Center provide fans and players alike with some of the NFL’s very best accommodations.

Now a distant memory, it is worth remembering the way things used to be for the Philadelphia Eagles.  Though play on the field has sometimes been inconsistent, the fact that Philly continues to have no issue attracting big name players and coaches should be the strongest indicator of how far things have truly come for this once behind the times organization.
