Flutie Back On The Patriots Sideline
The New England Patriots website identifies team cheerleaders by only their first names, but now we learn there is a Flutie on the Pats sideline. Quarterback Doug is not coming out of retirement at the age of 48, the Flutie family member on the roster happens to be Doug's daughter Alexa. The 23-year-old rookie member of the squad made the team on her fourth try, so just like her father, she took a circuitous route to the team.
About 300 women auditioned for the squad, with the tryout process involving a two-week boot camp.
Doug, a Heisman Trophy winner at Boston College, is fondly remembered in Boston for his "Hail Flutie" bomb that upset defending national champion Miami 47-45 in November of 1984. This play still stands as one of the most memorable in the history of college football. Although fans in South Florida may disagree.
