Meeting Wade Phillips at Cowboys Camp in Oxnard

Just a few minutes after morning practice concluded, Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips walked right in front of me, as I was hanging out in the parking lot of the Marriott Residence Inn.  I asked Phillips if I could pose for a photo with him. He agreed in a very soft spoken manner.  We took the photo and I wished him good luck for the upcoming season.  Wade responded by saying “thank you” and then he began walking slowly to his next destination.

If owner Jerry Jones talks fast and moves fast, Phillips is the total opposite.  Whether it was walking through the parking lot or presiding over practice, Phillips comes off as soft spoken and laid back.  He is a really chill, nice guy.  The word “chill” is not generally invoked when talking about an NFL head coach.  Phillips appears to be an exception in this case.  It was a pleasure meeting him.
