Tamed Bay To Breakers Run Set For Sunday
Sunday, the 101st Bay to Breakers race will take place in San Francisco. The 7.4 mile run, from the San Francisco Bay across the city to the Pacific Ocean, will welcome an expected field of 40,000 entrants.
But, times have changed.
Residents have complained that revelers had vomited and urinated in their yards along the course, with 26 runners hospitalized for alcohol poisoning in 2010 alone.
The run, which has been known for public drunkenness, bizarre costumes and even nudity, will look a little different this year.
The race, which was founded to lift the spirits of local citizens following the 1906 earthquake and fire, will now include sobriety checkpoints. 360 police officers will patrol the course to enforce the open container law and screen selected celebrants.
Several running groups have stated that they have no intention of following the new rules.
