Gender Equity In The World's Oldest Sporting Event

The Race, Oxford University and Cambridge UniversityThe annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities in London has been held since 1829 and is considered the oldest sporting event in the world.  Now, the regatta along the River Thames is about to get a feminine side.

Beginning in 2015, the event will add a separate competition for the women of the two famous institutions.

The race takes less than twenty minutes and is viewed by more than 300,000 spectators sitting along the riverbanks and millions more on television.

This year's race, won by Cambridge on April 7, marked the 158th men's competition. Cambridge currently holds an 81-76 lead over Oxford, with one draw back in 1877.
