Dominique Dawes Supporting A Good Cause (Video)

Dominique Dawes is a former United States artistic gymnast, who participated in three summer Olympic Games. The Silver Spring (MD) native and University of Maryland alum was a medal winner at all three Olympics, including a bronze in 1992 (Barcelona), gold in 1996 (Atlanta) and bronze in 2000 (Sydney).

Her shining moment took place in 1996, when she won a gold medal as a member of the legendary “Magnificent Seven” team, the first group to win a gold medal in United States Women's team competition. The team's most high profile athletes included Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu and Kerri Strug. 

Dawes was the first African-American woman to win a medal in artistic gymnastics.

Since retiring from competition, Dawes has been very involved with many charitable and community driven endeavors. One of the most notable examples involves her role as a co-chair of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.

The other co-chair is New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Dawes was on hand for a private event sponsored by Hormel foods and the Boys and Girls Clubs. The day's purpose was to teach young kids the importance of healthy eating, exercise and motivation.

The gathering had a nice turnout, as Dawes was very cordial to everyone who wanted her signature.
