Soccer superstar Lionel Messi had a very rough Sunday evening, as his Argentinian national team went down in the Copa America final to South American rival Chile. The 0-0 match was decided 4-2 in penalty kicks, with Messi missing his opportunity to score in the decisive session. Argentina has now lost their last three appearances in international finals, while the 29-year-old Messi (native of Rosario, Argentina) has yet to lead his nation to an international tournament victory, during his illustrious career.
After the match, Messi’s frustration came to a boiling point when he declared his apparent retirement from international competition.
"The national team is over for me. It's been four finals, it's not meant for me. I tried. It was the thing I wanted the most, but I couldn't get it, so I think it's over," explained the world’s best player.
While many observers believe this declaration was more of a heat of the moment outburst, than an actual cutting of ties with his national team, the soccer world most certainly hopes to see Messi reconsider in time for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
When Messi is not representing his native land, the icon is lacing up his cleats for FC Barcelona of La Liga, Spain’s top professional league. Now in his 12th professional season, Messi earns in the neighborhood of 36 million Euros per year, leading to an estimated net worth of $280 million (US Dollars).
This immense level of wealth has allowed Messi the ability to get pretty creative with his real estate holdings.
Here is a look at his very contemporary Barcelona home, that just so happens to be shaped like a soccer ball.
An aerial look at Messi mansion showcases a massive pool, which is set on a property designed to resemble a soccer pitch, with its two indoor structures intended to show off Messi’s famous number 10 uniform number.
Located 22 miles outside of Barcelona, the Lionel Messi soccer ball sits on a picturesque hillside, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea (upper right).
